Zach Tusinger resigns from Presidency.
Story by Drury Mirror:
Zach Tusinger, student body president, surprisingly resigned from his position at Thursday's Student Government Association (SGA) general assembly meeting.
"I know my announcement came as a surprise to quite a few people, but I firmly believe that it was not only the right decision for me, but the right decision for student government here at Drury," said Tusinger. "I was very private in my decision, though I had been considering it for about a month, and I was careful only to consult a few of my closest associates."
Tusinger distributed a written notice of his resignation to senators, stating that "as a sign that student government is in need of drastic change and new direction, as a sign that student government needs new faces and fresh perspectives, and as a sign that we cannot be idle and passive any longer, I am announcing my resignation from the office of president, effective today."
Tusinger believes SGA is not on the right path and he's been unable to make the necessary corrections to help the organization meet it's goals.
"We are not student led," said Tusinger. "We are not effective. Our stature on campus has not grown. We are at a crossroads."
The SGA constitution does not specify how a successor is chosen to fill a vacant position under such circumstances, but does note the vice president is the acting president in the president's absence.
Brandy Enver, current vice president, has not made a decision whether she would accept the position if it were offered to her.
Remaining executive council members will determine the best plan of action over the next few weeks.
Tusinger served almost two terms as president. The most notable event of his tenure was the renovation of the FSC lower level last year. He and senators also worked to build SGA's credibility with the unveiling of a new Web site, new legislation and allocation procedures, and the implementation of the College Readership Program.
Tusinger says he will spend the remaining weeks focused on coordinating an appropriate transition to his successor. He also plans to stay heavily involved on campus next semester and will continue to lobby administration for the building of a new student center.
"I will also be a huge advocate of student government elections in March and April," said Tusinger.
